Residential Building Permits
The following permit forms are to be utilized when performing work on One and Two-Family Dwellings ONLY.
Alterations & Additions – 1 & 2-Family
A LOCAL permit form must be submitted along with the following:
- Three (3) sets of construction plans (when required).
- Plans must be legible and scaled (1/8 inch or larger) on clean, white paper. Rough sketches, etc. are not acceptable.
- Plans provided in electronic format are appreciated in addition to the above.
- Engineering calculations (when required)
- Completed Cautionary Statement (when required)
- Permit fees

If your project is not included on the above list, you are encouraged to contact the Building Inspection Dept. at (414) 228-1711 for further assistance. Work completed without the necessary permit(s) is subject to quadruple permit fees.
New Home Permit – 1 & 2-Family
*A permit for a new 1 or 2-Family home must be submitted via the Electronic Building Permit System.
IMPORTANT: Permit submittals must include the following items listed below. Permit applications will NOT be considered complete until all forms, documents, and fees have been submitted.
- Three (3) sets of construction plans

A printable version of the online permit can be found here. You are encouraged to complete the paper form PRIOR to completing the online electronic form. Applications must be submitted via the Electronic Building Permit System. Paper forms can not be submitted without completing the online application.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) for Permit Applicants
*WISCONSIN ACT 211 requires that certain information be provided on a uniform permit form and that information must be reported monthly to the State of Wisconsin. In order to comply with this requirement, all building permits for new one and two family homes must be submitted in electronic format via the Electronic Building Permit System.
