Brush and Yard Waste Collection

Brush and Yard Waste

What is Yard Waste? Yard Waste Includes:

  • Leaves
  • Tree limbs or branches shall not exceed four inches in diameter or more than four feet in length.
  • Brush or vegetative matter resulting from landscaping maintenance.

When is Yard Waste Picked Up?

  • Yard Waste is picked up bi-weekly. Please see the Yard Waste Collection Map by clicking the image above to determine your collection week. Yard Waste must be out before 7:00 a.m. on the day of your regular garbage pick-up. Collection began March 27 for A week and began April 3 for B week.
  • GFL Environmental will collect Yard Waste on your collection week, which started the week of March 27 and ends the week of November 13, 2023. Residents do not have to call in and are not charged for the brush and yard waste collection during this period. Residents with questions about the program may contact GFL Environmental's Customer Service at their toll-free number (262) 679-0860.

Guidelines for Yard Waste Pick Up:

  • Residents can place no more than three cubic yards of Yard Waste at the curb for pick-up. The Yard Waste collection program is not a tree removal service.
  • All Yard Waste must be placed in sturdy paper bags suitable for containing Yard Waste or in other suitable containers clearly marked "YARD WASTE," excluding carts or plastic bags. The weight of each container must not exceed fifty pounds. If Yard Waste is not placed in a suitable container, the branches must be tied in a bundle weighing not more than 50 pounds.
  • NO GRASS CLIPPINGS will be collected. Residents are encouraged to use mulching mowers or compost their own grass clippings.
  • YARD WASTE MIXED WITH TRASH WILL BE REJECTED.
  • The following materials WILL NOT be collected: stumps; root systems or parts of roots attached to brush; brush mixed with garden debris; brush generated from site clearing activities; materials resulting from tree pruning or removal at an address other than the collection point; and tree branches greater than four inches in diameter and four feet in length.
  • Yard Waste must be placed at the edge of the road, curb or alley (the same location as garbage pick-up) abutting your property only, not extending onto pavement.

Water Main Flushing

ANNUAL HYDRANT FLUSHING

The City of Glendale will implement the annual water main flushing program through July.

Utility crews will locate HYDRANT FLUSHING signs in the area they will be working in on a weekly basis. The flushing program is designed to ensure proper operation of the fire hydrants and improve water quality by removing natural minerals like iron and calcium that sometimes collect in the bottom of water mains. This operation may cause a temporary discoloration in your water supply after we have flushed the hydrants near your home. Please let your water run for a few minutes to help clear your service line from any air or sediment that may have entered your water service line. Please be assured, although the water may be discolored, it is safe for human use.

Any inconvenience should not last more than a day. If problems persist, or for more information, please call the Glendale Water Utility at 414-228-1719 or Glendale Department of Public Works at 414-228-1710.

Pedestrian and Bike Safety

As the weather gets nicer and more people clamor to get outside and cure those winter blues, both drivers and pedestrians need to take some time to brush up on some simple safety tips that can help ensure everyone gets to their destination without injury. The National Safety Council estimates that nearly 80 million bicyclists share the road with motorized vehicles annually. That coupled with the significant increase in pedestrian traffic with the nicer weather can be a recipe for disaster if we are not careful. Trauma Centers across the country report a significant increase in traumatic injuries during the spring and summer months. In fact, deaths from bicycle injuries have risen nearly 29% over the last eight years. Following these steps can help keep you safe:

Cyclists:

  • Adjust your seat to the proper height and lock it in place.
  • Make sure all parts are secure and working properly. Consider having your bike checked annually at a local repair shop.
  • Ensure your tires are inflated properly.
  • Make sure the bike is equipped with reflectors on the front, rear and inside the spokes of the wheels. Likewise, if you are riding at night, ensure you have a working front headlight and rear taillight that are illuminated and flashing, but whenever possible ride during the day. If riding during the day is not possible, wear bright colored or fluorescent clothing or a traffic vest to make yourself more visible.
  • ALWAYS wear a helmet. As adults, wearing a helmet not only sets a good example for children, but it can also save your life in the event of a crash. Ensure your helmet is properly fitted. Most bike shops have individuals certified to perform bike helmet fitting.
  • Be familiar with local traffic laws and always ride single file in the same direction as traffic.

Pedestrians:

  • Whenever possible try to walk during daylight hours. If you must travel out after dusk, ensure you are wearing bright colored or reflective clothing.
  • Stay alert – avoid using a cell phone or wearing ear buds when approaching or crossing an intersection.
  • Obey all traffic laws and pedestrian crosswalk signage.
  • Always cross at a crosswalk or designated pedestrian crossing when possible.

Safety on the road is the responsibility of EVERYONE. If we work together and all do our part, we can ensure that the outdoors are safe for all, no matter the modality used for travel.
